Start by deciding where the patch will be used. A hat patch, uniform badge, backpack patch, and retail merchandise patch may all need different sizes, backing options, and production styles.
Then review the artwork. Bold designs usually work well in embroidery, fine detail is better as woven or printed, and outdoor or tactical designs often fit PVC or TPU.
Match the style to the artwork
Use embroidery for bold texture, woven for small text, printed for full-color artwork, PVC for molded durability, and leather for premium branding.
Choose a readable size
Small patches need simplified details. Large jacket or back patches can handle stronger shapes and more visual weight.
Pick a practical backing
Sew-on is universal, iron-on is convenient on compatible fabrics, Velcro is removable, and adhesive is temporary or display-focused.
Keep production limits in mind
Tiny letters, thin lines, gradients, and photographs may need a different patch type than the customer first expects.
